Following the creation of a heavily fortified zone in the centre of Praxis by Chaos forces, the imperium were at somewhat of a loss as to how to proceed. General Konev needed intelligence about the strength and dispositions of enemy forces in the centre of the city, but the imperial cult militia forces were exhausted. Konev turned to the astartes to undertake a series of raids against the traitors in the city, and the Dark Angels jumped at the chance. Their first encounter with the chaos forces indicated that rather than regiments and astartes legions defending Praxis, Stahl and the Emerald Serpent has seen how effective the imperial militia forces had been and had similarly employed irregular fanatical units in the city. Encountering cultists and only a few traitor marines, the Dark Angels were unable to gain meaningful information, and in the firefight found the cultists overrunning imperial defences.
Not giving up, the Loyalist Astartes made a second strike against the enemy, holding back the cultist horde and bolstering imperial defences in north Praxis. It appeared that the central zone of the city was heavily defended and Konev would not be able to risk an immediate attritional frontal assault. Armed with this new information general Konev began plans to encircle the city, cutting it off from supply before eventually assaulting the shattered defenders.
