While the major factions prepared their expeditions to move on the Lysis system in force, the Grey Knights prepared for their next strike. The alliance were becoming a concern given their strengthening position, and despite not showing signs of daemonic incursions at Echo Reach, the Ordo Malleus, lacking any support from the Ordo Xenos thanks to inquisitor Huron’s disappearance, decided to take action themselves. The underlying reason to strike at the alliance was the fear that the tau and their heretic federal allies would unknowingly and unwittingly allow the daemons of the warp to overcome them at Hexis while foolishly following the lies of the eldar.
The Grey Knights appeared without warning in the outer reaches of the Echo Reach Star system and directed their attack against the outer tau bases. With no time to react and send reinforcements the tau stationed at the outpost. The defenders of Malkaor’s hunter cadres gave a spirited defence, but the Grey Knights used their manoeuvrability to reduce the impact of the tau long range weaponry. At close quarters the space marines were unstoppable, and the tau were forced to abandon their base and watch in dismay as their facilities were systematically ransacked by the spiteful astartes. Three hours and the destruction was complete, and the Grey Knights withdrew before the tau fleet could intervene. The outer planet burned as the alliance counted the cost of the punitive raid.
