The imperial forces moved into the ruins of the once suburban neighbourhoods of the giant cities on a broad front. On their left flank the imperium met the vanguard forces of the iron warriors. In the tumbled rubble of the ruins of Menthoteph the traitorous forces were opposed by the thin red line of the Praetorians. Despite fielding horrific obliterators and the twisted parodies of once noble astartes warriors, the small iron warriors army was held then turned back by the stubbornness of the guard.
In the centre, nearer to Praxis itself, the Novgorod Guard faced the Kel Sandros Eldar, but the xenos could not turn back the slow grind of the guard forces. Even the federal Librians, holding the valley between the two cities, were hard pressed by the Lycannon. Although the Librians held the pass against the Lycannon infantry, the federal force found itself out flanked after the loss in Praxis itself and were obliged to withdraw. In the first day of fighting the Imperium had achieved their objectives. The approaches to the cities of Praxis and Menthoteph were secured, and now general Konev turned his attentions to his flanks. On the broad plains of Hexis he would unleash the most terrifying weapons in his armoury. The titans.
