After the loss of Kuneus general Kutuzov knew that he must win the next engagement in order to stop the total collapse of his southern armies on Mordecai Secundus. A drive north east by the forces of chaos risked the loss of the Abrax mines, a critical strategic asset crucial to the entire campaign. A defeat here could even signal the end of the campaign - and his life.
The chaos attack did not take long to develop, as a mixed force of tzeentch and nurgle forces pushed their way towards the mines. Defending the line were Kutuzov's remaining knights, with a force of Scions behind, ready to fill any breach in the lines. The battle raged furiously for hours as the imperial force stoically resisted the apparent wall of enemy forces coming towards them at a sedate but inexorable pace. The scions were forced to deploy early on to prevent this tide from washing over the defences, and many acts of heroism were noted, including the guard regiment's own 2IC, who threw himself infront of a horde of possessed to save the commander of the Gregorian 88th regiment.
At the climax of the engagement, a venomcrawler had come close to the largest of the imperial war engines when it was taken down by imperial firepower. The ensuing explosion was visible for miles, and as the mushroom cloud dissipated nothing was left in the vicinity of the chaos construct including the venerable imperial knight. The imperium had held on however, and the chaos forces had not made any inroads into the Abrax mines, ensuring the Mordecai campaign was still very much in the balance.
